Recent American Colony Hotel Review: "The hotel and grounds are breathtaking! The first night we stayed in the least expensive room...and it was very large with wonderful view of gardens below. The next 2 nights we were supposed to stay in one of the historic Pasha rooms, but they upgraded us to a suite---which was HUGE with a balcony and bathroom with a seperate tub and shower. (I would have liked to see the other room --just to know what it was like.) The breakfasts were great with many choices...and eating in the courtyard was quite refreshing! Everyone was very helpful --the desk staff, the bell boys, the wait staff!! Our only problem was with the taxis outside...they will overcharge you -- so decide on a price before taking one. None of them used their meters, even if we asked! And we found that they did not know all the areas very well...if you are visiting friends, make sure you have directions. (This is not just an "American Colony Taxi" issue...we found it the same way throughout the country!) We did walk to the old city down Nablus Road through the Damascus Gate...not the prettiest walk, but we felt safe, and were able to buy water more cheapbefore we got into the city. I enjoyed the hotel and would recommend it to other travelers."
